A mix of veterans and newcomers advance to Sweet Sixteen at Michigan Amateur

ROYAL OAK- There were relatively few surprises during the first two rounds of match play at the Michigan Amateur Championship on Red Run Golf Club, as three of the top ten seeds won both matches and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
Leading the way was medalist Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids) with convincing 3&2 and 6-4 victories over Johnathan Kalmink and Steve Larson, respectively. Randy Lewis (Alma), the 1992 and 1994 Michigan Amateur champion also won both of his matches.
Of the Sweet Sixteen golfers, only five are making repeat appearances in the Sweet Sixteen. This group includes 2007 Michigan Amateur Champion, Greg Davies (West Bloomfield). Other veterans in the Sweet Sixteen include Mike Ignasiak, Lewis, Ryan Brehm (2006 Runner-up), and Jeff Champine.
The group of sixteen is rather young, as 10 of the players left are 25 or younger. Tobin Dunigan is the youngest player in the field at age 17, a junior attending Jackson Lumen Christi.
?The level of players in this field is unbelievable,? said Dunigan. I enjoy playing match play because strategy is everything.?
The Championship continues on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. There are several intriguing matchups, including two Michigan State University teammates playing against each other in the 8:30 a.m. match, Grant Tungate (East Lansing) vs. Steven Cuzzort (Grosse Ile).
The quarterfinal matches will take place on Friday afternoon, with the semifinals and final match scheduled for Saturday.
