New GAM President Bill Wright was officially sworn in at the 2009 GAM Annual Meeting on May 5. Wright is a member at Lakelands Golf & Country Club in Brighton and is taking over the presidency during the GAM’s 90th anniversary. He serves as Chairman of the GAM?s Communication Committee and plans to work hard this year to promote golf and the GAM.
?The GAM has the opportunity to promote golf for people of all ages and genders,? Wright said. ?That includes support for college students through the Evans Scholars plus more GAM tournaments for all skill levels from juniors to seniors.?
?New Governors John Tomey (Walnut Creek CC), David Price (Muskegon CC), Jim Judge (Oakland Hills CC), Danielle Buth (Egypt Valley CC) and John Rowlands (Indianwood G&CC) were also officially inducted at the meeting. Jim Judge also serves as chairman of the GAM Communications Committee. Wright and all of the GAM Governors give generously of their time to support the GAM by serving on various committees and working at events and tournaments.
? ?? The GAM also handed out awards at the Annual Meeting. Former Detroit News sportswriter and current Golf Writers Association of America President Vartan Kupelian was given the GAM Distinguished Service Award; Lynn Saunders was awarded Club Representative of the Year honors. Saunders is a member at Lakelands Golf & Country Club and in addition to being the GAM Club Representative serves as the Handicap Chairman at Lakelands. ?
Kupelian has covered many GAM events over the years for the Detroit News and has won countless writing awards. He is a graduate of Highland Park High School and Wayne State University and began his journalism career at The Royal Oak Daily Tribune.
