Almost every tee shot at Lyon Oaks provides golfers ample landing space on wide fairways that are exquisitely conditioned. Numerous fairway bunkers are strategically placed throughout the course, and are very much in play. You will find yourself in quite a few of them if you aren’t able to maintain your accuracy off the tee. Lyon Oaks is a course where you can use driver off the tee on most holes, but being accurate with those shots is just as important as the distance.
The opening holes on the course give you a true indication of the type of course that Lyon Oaks is. With no adjacent fairways, Lyon Oaks is a very natural and serene course with few overly intimidating tee shots. The back nine is similar in distance to the front, with only one par four playing over 400 yards from the white tees, and is also very secluded. The tenth hole features a dogleg right, and a nice approach over water. There are some considerable carries off the tee, and several holes also have marsh areas resting between the fairways and greens, creating the need for accurate approaches.
The eighteenth hole is a mid-length par five with a fairly open tee shot, but is a challenging hole nonetheless. Long hitters may be able to reach the green, or at least carry the marsh, on their second shot; but for those who can’t carry the ball that far, laying up near the 150-yard marker is the best way to go. There is water left, which is easier to negotiate from a shorter distance. It is a challenging and beautiful final hole on a great course.
In addition to a wonderful golf course, Lyon Oaks is home to a driving range that is perfect to warm up on before your round. It is intricately designed with various bent grass tee stations and target areas that feature greens, hills and rolling mounds. The course also has a large practice green that is also wonderfully conditioned and representative of the types of putting surfaces you will encounter on the course. A full service pro shop and dining area are also offered to visitors.
Lyon Oaks Golf Course is one of the best public courses in the area in terms of design, conditioning, service and overall facilities. To book your next tee time at this beautiful course, call the Pro Shop at 248-437-1488.
