Zylstra & Layman are First GAM Senior Match Play Champs

PORT HURON ? Bill Zylstra (Plymouth / Michigan Publinx Golf Association) subscribes to the Scotty Bowman theory that to win a championship you have to be a little bit lucky. Zylstra won the inaugural GAM Senior Match Play tournament defeating Mike Fedewa (Canton / Pheasant Run) 2 & 1. He attributes his victory in part to Lady Luck.

?My opponent started the round with three bogeys so that was what went well for me today,? said Zylstra. ?Neither one of us played very well today, but I just ended up having a little better luck.?

Zylstra thought he might have lost his four-leaf clover on the 15th hole at Port Huron Country Club when he lipped out a long putt. He managed to maintain his steady pace and emerge with the win.

?I guess when you win the tournament you can laugh at that kind of thing,? said Zylstra.

Zylstra won the 2008 GAM Senior Championship and was the 2008 Senior Four-Ball champion with his partner Pete Allen.

In the Super Senior division, Robert Layman (Bloomfield Hills / Pine Trace) defeated John O?Donovan (Ada / Egypt Valley) 5&4. Layman played a steady, consistent game but had his own bit of luck on the ninth green when he chipped the ball right into the hole.

?I missed the green and was chipping and John was already putting,? said Layman. ?But I chipped it in and I feel like that gave me momentum. I don?t feel like either one of us played great golf today, but I was able to stay out of trouble ? which at Port Huron with all of the trees is important ? and that chip really gave me a boost.?
