Slobodnik-Stoll wins GAM Women?s Mid Am — Again

Winning the GAM Women?s Mid Amateur is getting to be a habit for Michigan State University women?s golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.? She defended her 2008 championship June 10 at Western Golf & Country Club shooting a 73-76?149 to capture the title again. This is the fifth consecutive GAM Women?s Mid Amateur championship for Slobodnik-Stoll.

?It was kind of a scrape it around round,? said Slobodnik-Stoll. ?I wouldn?t say anything was working really well for me today. There was no point where I felt like it was coming together for me.?

Slobodnik-Stoll said she found herself playing quite a bit from the dense and very long rough which made for a very challenging day. Western?s tiny greens, tight fairways and big trees made negotiating the fairways all the more taxing.

?There was one shot where I was in the rough and had a downhill lie on a par 4,? said Slobodnik-Stoll. ?I was going to hit my 5-iron and then I ended up going with my 5-wood and that didn?t really work out so well. That was my lesson for the day to just play within myself.?

Slobodnik-Stoll said her goal was to shoot under par, and she came within a stroke on the first day of the tournament with a 73. That did not dampen her spirits and instead made her push harder the next day.

?If you want to continually improve you have to have those numbers in your mind,? said Slobodnik-Stoll. ?Even though I didn?t do it this week it is important for me to keep trying. The course was in great shape and it is an old, old Don Ross course so it was just terrific.?
