Manistee Golf and Country Club Hosting GAM Women’s Senior Championship

  MANISTEE – Since 1901
Manistee Golf & Country Club has combined great golf with stunning, timeless
views of Lake Michigan.

  On Sunday and Monday
it will serve as the host and backdrop for the 22nd GAM Women’s Senior
Championship presented by Sullivan Golf & Travel.

  A field of 65 senior
women age 50-plus will battle in a championship flight and three other flights
over 36 holes of stroke play with gross and net prizes awarded.

   Manistee Golf &
Country Club’s traditional course weaves through heather, sand dunes and mature
trees, and offers stunning views of Lake Michigan that compare with any of the
lakeside courses in the state. It has parkland and links design characteristics
and has been around since 1901 on a bluff within the city limits of Manistee.

  Legendary architect
Tom Bendelow designed the first nine holes, and H.B. Matthews is credited with
the redesign of the current course. The club is one of the oldest operating
clubs in Michigan.

   The field for the
championship includes six past champions, including defending champion Julie
Massa of Holt, who earlier this summer won her second consecutive Michigan
Senior Women’s Amateur title.

  Joan Garety of Ada,
who won in 2016, is a four-time champion dating back to 2006. Susan Campbell of
Kalamazoo, who won three times between 2004 and 2008, is in the field, as well
as two-time champions Barb Schmid of Grand Rapids (2005, 2011), Maureen
Whitehead of Charlevoix (2002, 2003) and Terry Delcamp of Grand Blanc (2014,
2015).

  Last year, Massa,
the GAM Senior Women’s Player of the Year for three years running, shot an
even-par 72 for 147 at Hidden River in Brutus to beat Audrey Akins of LaSalle,
Ontario, by one shot.
