GOLF ASSOCIATION OF MICHIGAN

COURSE OF THE WEEK: Candlestone Golf Resort

Built in 1978, Candlestone Golf Resort is a beautiful 18-hole golf course in West Michigan.

What started in 1971 as an idea by a group of local businessmen of a luxurious restaurant and hotel in a picturesque setting that used to be an apple orchard has transformed into a challenging and breathtaking golf course. A year after coming up with the initial idea, a spacious dining room with a glass wall overlooking the apple orchard, complete with cascading water fountain and sunken bar, and a 25-room hotel were built.

Architect Jerry Matthews finished what some call one of his best designed courses in 1978. The course is filled with majestic pines and rolling hills that stood behind the orchard, which proved to be a hidden treasure for Candlestone’s beautiful fairways, lush greens and demanding obstacles.

In the early 1990′s, Grand Rapids auto dealer Joe Duthler purchased Candlestone Golf Resort. He ran the facility until 2008 when current owners Steve Leach and Cathy Farr purchased the resort. Leach and Farr lead a group that has great vision for Candlestone Golf Resort and has backed up that vision with a new restaurant and lounge, new greenside deck, and all-new remodeled motel rooms and lobby.

The course layout features a wide variety of both open and tight holes with some fairways separated by rows of large pines and hardwoods. Water comes into play on more than half of the holes on the course, and more than 30 sand bunkers strategically located throughout make accuracy a key.

With tee sets ranging from 4,062 yards up to 7,016 yards, Candlestone Golf Resort caters to any golfers needs. The full tee information is:
