ANN ARBOR ? Christopher Mory (Haslett/Meridian Sun) kept the steady pace he set in the first two rounds of the 88th GAM Championship at Travis Pointe Country Club and finished the third and final round at the top of the leader board.
A birdie on 17 put him four strokes ahead of his closest competitor going into the final hole. It wasn?t until that point that Mory felt he was able to relax a bit and enjoy the competition.
?The first two rounds were kind of free and easy,? said Mory. ?Today I felt a lot more pressure and there were just a lot of thoughts going through my head all through the final round.?
Mory shot 2-under-par 69s in the first two rounds of the tournament and shot a one-under-par 71 in today?s round. ?
?The two holes before 17 I really got up and down and then on 17 I had a good drive and that set me up for a good second shot and I ended up having a good putt for birdie,? said Mory. ?I knew that put me four strokes up so at that point I was able to relax a little. My goal was to play to par today because I thought I needed to do that in order to win.?
Mory, 19, is a sophomore on the Michigan State University golf team and was a three-time All State Division II golf selection at Haslett High School. Last year he finished 13th at the GAM Championship.
?Today was definitely not as easy as the first two rounds but I stuck with it and it feels great to come away with a win,? said Mory.
