BAD AXE – A bit of a hidden gem of the thumb area, Verona Hills Golf Club, is the site this week of the 16th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur Championship presented by Sullivan Golf Travel.
The state’s top senior women golfers will play Monday and Tuesday in one round of bracket qualifying stroke play and then three rounds of matches to determine an overall champion and winners in multiple flights.
Established in 1924, Verona Hills Golf Club surprises golfers with its hilly terrain in one of the state’s flatter land regions. It’s a traditional tree-lined course with seclusion located in Huron County, just east of Bad Ace on M-142, and the public is welcome to the semi-private facility with a stunning clubhouse.
Verona Hills is located in Huron County, Michigan, just east of Bad Axe on M-142. It plays to a maximum of 6,466 yards and a par of 71. Golf operations at Verona are under the direction of PGA Professional Phil Gornowich. Scott Adams is the superintendent.
The Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur will crown a champion in the championship bracket as well as winners in other brackets named after GAM notables. All participants are guaranteed two days of play because consolations matches are also part of the format.
Two-time defending champion Julie Massa of Holt and four other former champions will be part of the championship bracket. They include two-time champion Joan Garety of Ada, two-time champion Susan Campbell of Kalamazoo, 2015 champion Donna Benford of Linden and 2013 champion Cindy Obermeyer of Birmingham.
Last year, Holt rallied from an early deficit to turn back Campbell in the final match.
