WILMINGTON, N.C. — Paced by junior Ashley Kim‘s second top-20 individual finish in four events, the University of Michigan women’s golf team closed its fall season with an 891 event total to post a 13th-place showing Sunday (Oct. 27) at UNC Wilmington’s Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall.
“We had a little something to prove in today’s round, and we finished with a solid final day,” said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. “We took care of the par 5s and limited our mistakes. The wind was pretty difficult today, and we were able to get some nice momentum going in our round. We had two players shoot even par on what I would say was the toughest day of the tournament.
“It was great to see Ashley’s (Kim) game come together this week. She’s really gaining confidence with her ball striking and managed the course well this week. She stayed patient when facing some adversity and that helped her save momentum in her rounds to have a nice top 20 finish in a strong field.”
Closing the fall season in Wilmington for the third straight year, and for the seventh time overall, the Wolverines got off to a solid start in Friday’s (Oct. 25) opening round led by Kim’s 71 (-1) — her third sub-par round of the season. Adding in an even-par 72 from sophomore Ashley Lau, U-M etched a 296 to sit 11th after 18 holes.
A second-round low 75 from Kim and four 76s, Michigan followed with a 303 on Saturday as the Wolverines dropped four spots to 15th after 36 holes. With even pars from Kim and freshman Hailey Borja in Sunday’s final round, U-M tallied its event-best 292 team total and moved up two spots to close the fall 13th.
For the second time in her four events, Kim posted a top-20 individual finish as she tied for 17th with a two-over 218 total. Lau followed with her second top-50 finish of the fall as she closed with a 222 total to tie for 39th. Using her final-round even-par 72, Borja rebounded from a slow start to finish 54th at 226.
“Overall, we had some flashes of brilliance throughout the entire falI season,” added Dowling. “We are deep and competitive. It shows the team what we are capable of, and a big motivator for us in our winter training. We’ve got more to prove this spring and we are excited for the great opportunities ahead.”
With the fall season completed, the Wolverines will shift their focus to midseason training. The Maize and Blue will not be in tournament action again until 2020, when U-M heads to Jalisco, Mexico, Sunday through Tuesday, Feb. 16-18, for Virginia’s Guadalajara International Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club.
