SPRING LAKE – A “Sweet 16” was determined and celebrated Wednesday at the 103rd Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship presented by Carl’s Golfland at Spring Lake Country Club.

Last year’s runner-up Elayna Bowser of Dearborn, this year’s medalist and top seed Anna Kramer  and Kayla Krueger, both hailing out of the host Spring Lake CC, and two-time former champion and Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll of Haslett were among those who won first-round matches Wednesday and made the round of 16. A traditional Sweet 16 dinner was presented Wednesday evening.

The round of 16 and the quarterfinals will be contested Thursday with a final four determined by the end of the day. Semifinals and the final match are Friday.

Kramer topped Jamie Erickson of Howell 6 and 4 in the first match of the day Wednesday, and 2-seed Bowser beat Maggie Pietila of Brighton 8 and 7.

Slobodnik-Stoll, seeded at No. 12, beat Katlin Ifkovits 6 and 5 to move on. Krueger beat Grace Zimmerman of Romeo in 19 holes and will meet Slobodnik-Stoll, the head women’s golf coach at Michigan State, in the round of 16.

Katie Mina Lee of Ann Arbor, seeded No. 25, is the lowest seed remaining among the 32 who started match play. She beat No. 8 seed Viktoria Basso of Lake Orion 3 and 2.
