The third and final sectional of the 12th GAM Senior/Mid-Am Team Championship was completed Monday at Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club and the field is set for the finals later this summer.
Josh Mitroka of Riverview and Bill Monteith of Dearborn shot a 3-under 69 in four-ball or best-ball in the morning round and then combined for a foursomes or alternate shot round of even-par 72 for 141 and the win.
They finished just ahead of two teams at 142.
Matt Ostby of Kingsley and Wayne Hamal of Empire shot 68 and 74 for their 142 and won a scorecard playoff to get the second place trophies.
Grosse Ile members David Vaclav of Flat Rock and Gregg Bonamici of Dearborn made up the other team at 142 with rounds of 68 and 76.
The tournament format sends the top two teams from each sectional to the finals of he championship on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville. Other finalists were determined a week ago at Travis Pointe Country Club in Ann Arbor and Western Golf & Country Club.
The GAM Championship Committee decided Monday to invite two additional teams to make eight finalists. Vaclav and Bonamici, who lost in the scorecard playoff, will move on to the finals, as will a team from Travis Pointe that lost out on trophies last week in a scorecard playoff for second place.
Mike Ignasiak of Saline and Andrew Tindall of Chelsea had the most dominating performance last Monday with a four-ball or best-ball 10-under 62 powering an 11-shot win among the teams playing at Travis Pointe. The duo also had a foursomes or alternate shot round of 1-under 71 for a 133 total.
The next closest teams at Travis Pointe came in at even-par 144 totals and will play in the finals.
Randy Lewis of Alma and Jason May of Oakland shot 71 in the morning four-ball and 73 in the foursomes and took second-place trophies in a scorecard playoff. Chad Johnson of Livonia and Tom Senkowski of Rochester Hills shot a 68 in four-ball and 76 in foursomes to also finish at 144 and will be invited to play in the finals.
Tom Daigle of Wixom and Brad Bastion of Shelby Township emerged as winners at Western G&CC. They shot a 6-under 66 in four-ball and a 72 in foursomes for a 138.
The defending champions and 2017 winners of the tournament, Tom Gieselman of Commerce Township and Scott Strickland of Bloomfield Hills, are also headed back to the finals as a second-place team. They shot 66 in four-ball and then 76 in foursomes for 142.
Just missing the finals and finishing third were Ken Hudson of Bloomfield Hills and Alex Zeoli of Royal Oak, who shot 68 in four-ball and 75 in foursomes for 143.
Each of the 105 starting teams in the championship feature at a Senior golfer (55-and-over) teamed up with a Mid-Amateur golfer (23-and-over).
