The Golf Association of Michigan’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee has created an award to recognize outstanding leadership and tireless efforts in addressing and raising awareness about issues of equity, diversity and inclusion through the game of golf.
Nominations for the first Champion of Diversity and Inclusion Award are being accepted through Monday, Jan. 17, 2022.
“Realizing that the efforts of one person or an organization can be so staggering and can truly effect change in our world today, the GAM Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee has created the Champion of Diversity and Inclusion Award,” the committee said in announcing the award.
“These efforts can include programs or activities for adaptive golf, minorities or those of ethnic origin, the hearing, visually or mentally impaired, or those with catastrophic injuries.”
To be considered for nomination, a person must have lived or worked in Michigan for at least five years. An organization must be based in Michigan and have existed for at least five years.
Robert Ofoli, chairman of the DEI Committee, said bringing recognition to people in the community who are already promoting diversity is a wonderful idea.
“When you start recognizing the people doing the work it encourages others to get involved,” he said. “We want to continue to drive for diversity in golf, and award those making these great efforts already.”
