Sugar Springs Golf Club Hosting 18th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur

GLADWIN – Sugar Springs Golf Club is hosting a Golf Association of Michigan tournament for the first time Monday and Tuesday.

The top senior women golfers in the state will play in the 18th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur Championship presented by Pepsi on the course located in the residential community of Sugar Springs, which is celebrating 50 years in 2022, and is located between Gladwin and West Branch.

The Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur provides the best senior players in the state with the opportunity to work their way through flighted match play brackets, as well as consolation matches so all participants are guaranteed to play on both days.

The first day stroke play round is only required for players that seek to qualify for the Championship Bracket. An additional Gross bracket of eight will be made consisting of players that do not make the top eight in stroke play, plus those that would rather play gross matches but do not want to participate in stroke-play qualifying. All other brackets will consist of net matches with players seeded by index.

The course, designed by Michigan Golf Hall of Fame designer Jerry Matthews, features 18 holes that can be played to a maximum of 6,737 yards. It has been rated three stars by Golf Digest and has made The Michigan Golfer list of the top 25 public courses in Michigan.

Mark Bayer is the head golf professional and Dwight McCann is the superintendent. Learn more about Sugar Springs at sugarsprings.net.

Last year, Monroe’s Cathy Netter won the Jean Murray Trophy after she rallied from a three-down deficit through nine holes to top Lewiston’s Lori Schlicher on the final hole of the title match at Mount Pleasant Country Club.

Netter and Schlicher are returning this year, as are several other past champions. Those include three-time winner Maureen Whitehead of Charlevoix, two-time winner Joan Garety of Ada, two-time winner Sue Campbell of Kalamazoo, two-time winner Julie Massa of Holt and 2009 winner Barb Schmid of Grand Rapids.
