English Captures State Jr. Title

After four grueling days of competition at Forest Akers West Course on the campus of Michigan State University Blake English of Charlotte has earned the title of Michigan Junior State Amateur Champion. English’s title comes after a 4 & 3 decision in the final match against Matthew Alessi of Bloomfield Hills. Alessi advanced to the finals after a morning victory over Stroke Play Medalist Joey Garber of Petoskey, English defeated Matt Paterini, Saline, in his morning match. English qualified for the match play segment of the tournament after rounds of 73-70-77=220 that earned him the fourteen seed in the 16-player bracket. English changed his approach and mindset once the match play portion started choosing to play, “More aggressively opposed to just taking things as they came in stroke play.” In a summer that has included a win at the Michigan Jr. PGA and a trip to the U.S. Junior Boys at Shoal Creek in Alabama, English rates this as his biggest win to this point in his career. After the round English stated that it was nice to get the win but it has made him realize he still needs to work harder on his game and keep the high expectations that he has for himself to continue to succeed on the golf course.
