Longtime golf partners Bill Zylstra (Plymouth) and Tim Katanski (Ypsilanti) worked their magic on Monday to win the 1st GAM Senior Mid Am Team Championship at Plum Hollow Country Club. The duo shot a 68-74-142 in the one day tournament that featured 18 holes of four-ball and 18 holes of foursomes.
Gray Tuttle (Holt) and Russ Cunningham (DeWitt) were the runners up with a score of 67-76-143.
“Tim played really well today and sometimes that is what happens — one person carries the team,” said Zylstra. “I really think the reason we won today was Tim’s play.”
Zylstra estimates that he and Katanski have played in five or six Atlas Trophy matches together and a half a dozen Fuller Cup matches as a team. They have a good chemistry that seemed to be working perfectly at the Senior Mid Am Team.
Zylstra noted that the scores, for the most part, were higher in the second round of the tournament. He points to the challenging format as the reason.
“That second round when you are only using half the shots if you get a bad shot it makes it really difficult,” said Zylstra.
Zylstra expects this tournament to grow into one of the GAM’s most popular events.
“When you have 30 teams that couldn’t get in because the event was full, you know it’s a winner,” said Zylstra. “You have seniors who want to play and have the time and money to participate in the tournament. I thought it was a great event and just something different as far as the format.”
