SAGINAW?The 16th GAM Women?s Championship, sponsored by the Detroit Lions & Ford Field, named Laura Kueny (Whitehall) its 2007 Champion. Kueny finished off today?s competition with a score of 72 for an overall 36-hole score of 143 to gain this year?s title. Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll (Haslett) gained the 2007 Runner-Up title after posting a 72 today for a combined score of 145.
The 2007 GAM Women?s Championship was held at Saginaw Country Club and consisted of two 18-hole rounds of stroke play competition. The first round was contested yesterday, August 13, and the final round was held today, August 14.
After the first day of competition, Britney Hamilton (Lake Orion) came out on top with an 18-hole score of 70, one under par for Saginaw Country Club. Kueny followed one stroke behind Hamilton for the second place position with a 71. Slobodnik-Stoll, Michigan State Women?s Golf Coach, came in at third place with a 73.
Kueny, a 19-year-old Michigan State golfer, was the one who pulled ahead in the final round for the win. Ironically, she was paired with her college coach, Slobodnik-Stoll. Of competing against her coach, Kueny claimed, ?We battled it out. She was ahead after the front nine, so I had to do something on the back nine.?
Both Kueny and Slobodnik-Stoll played two strong rounds at this tournament. Kueny claimed, ?My coach had a phenomenal short game; that helped her today. I hit a lot of greens and just two-putted for birdie. Once in a while I had some tough times but I made up for it on the next hole.?
This is the first time Kueny has competed in the GAM Women?s Championship. When asked what her goal was coming into this tournament, Kueny replied, ?Obviously, to win and play my game. I don?t think anyone can beat me when I play my game. That?s what my high school coach told me and that?s what my parents tell me. I just go out there and play the course and see what happens.?
Kueny is now finished with summer tournaments and will be heading back to Michigan State soon for classes starting August 27. She will undoubtedly receive more solid training from Coach Slobodnik-Stoll.
