Zylstra Tops Field at Point O’ Woods

With 36 years in between visits to Point O’ Woods Country Club the additional week added to the wait due to inclement weather last week proved well worth the wait for Bill Zylstra. Zylstra captured the 22nd GAM Senior Championship in Benton Harbor after rounds of 73-74=147. Zylstra used solid ball striking to make his way around the par-72 layout the last two days carding two birdies and five bogies. Zylstra noted that high scores lurked around every corner of the 6,637 yard layout but he was able to manage his game to capture the title and avoid those high scores during the two competition days. When asked where this accomplishment ranks Zylstra replied, “Very high you don’t get too many chances to win a State Championship, unless you’re Jack Van Ess.” Van Ess is a longtime competitor in GAM events with several wins to his name and was competing at Point O’ Woods. With the win Zylstra will now play the role as defending champion next year when the GAM Senior Championship is contested at Blythefield Country Club.
