ROCHESTER — After the first day of match play at Great Oaks Country Club, the field has been cut to 16 golfers. In the final match of the day, Minjoo Lee (Clarkston /Bucknell University) defeated Maria Demarco (Troy/Western Michigan University) 2 & 1.
The match was tied for most of the morning, but Demarco shot over the green on the par 3 16, then three putted for a double bogey. Lee started the 17th 1 up and pared the hole to win the match.
?I didn?t want to be greedy off the tee because I tend to draw,? said Lee. ?I laid up with a 3-wood and on my next shot, I was about 130 to the pin and I used my 7-iron. Again I didn?t want to be greedy. My plan was to just play steady on that hole and it worked out.?
Despite faltering on the 16th, Demarco is pleased with her play for the week.
?I thought I played very well,? said Demarco. ?This is the first time I have ever played match play in any competition so that was different for me. In a way it is easier than stroke play because your score doesn?t really matter but I think I like stroke play better.?
It was the first time either golfer had made the cut.
Maddi Massa (Holt/Michigan State University) advanced to the ?Sweet 16? defeating Elizabeth Ecker (Niles) 1 up despite having seven three putts on the day. She won the match on a long putt on 18.
?It was just an all-around good putt,? said Massa. ?The first two days in the stroke play part of the tournament I putted great so I?m not sure why I had so many three putts today but you know where I?m heading now to practice before tomorrow!?
