Hebert Wins Boyne Tournament of Champions in Playoff
BOYNE FALLS — Five second-place finishes since 1999?in the Boyne Tournament of Champions was enough for Scott Hebert, althought?his first win didn’t come easy either.
?? The 2008 national club professional champion, five-time Michigan Open champion and three-time Michigan PGA champion, finally donned the winner’s’ traditional green jacket after topping Grosse Ile amateur Steven Cuzzort in a three-hole sudden-death playoff Wednesday on the Alpine course at Boyne Mountain Resort.
?? The final round was interrupted by a?rain-delay of three hours and 40 minutes, but Hebert and Cuzzort finished the day with great drama.
? “That?s one I never won before and it feels great,” said Hebert, the?head pro at Grand Traverse Resort in Acme. “I just turned 40 you know, so you never know how many more chances I will get to win. I?m glad I got this one.”
Hebert shot a?4-under-par 68 on the Alpine course for an 11-under-par 205 total to tie Cuzzort at the end of regulation. Cuzzort, a former Wayne State University golfer seeking to be the tournament’s first-ever amateur winner, closed with a 69.
In sudden death, both players parred the first two holes before the drama moved to the 186-yard par 3 17th.
? ?Cuzzort, who had come up just short of the green in regulation and played to bogey, hit it just over the green the second time. He chipped to five feet and missed for another bogey.
Hebert, who?birdied 17 in regulation with a swinging 10-foot putt, played to par from 20-feet in the playoff for the victory.
??”I?m disappointed I missed that last putt, but I know it was a good week for me and it?s something to build off of if I decide to take my game to the next level,” Cuzzort said.
Hebert, who won $9,000 with the green jacket, had the money in the bag before the playoff.?
??Bill Zylstra, a 58-year-old Westland resident, is the No. 2 ranked senior amateur in the country. He fired a 67 in the final round for a 206 total, one shot out of the playoff and third alone.
Andy Matthews, a Canadian Tour player from Grand Rapids, closed with two birdies in a 68 and tied for fourth at 207?with mini-tour players Korey Mahoney of East Lansing (69)?and Andy Ruthkoski of Muskegon (69).
Jeff Cuzzort, Steve?s older brother and a mini-tour pro, was the leader starting the final round and played in the same group with his brother. He slipped to a 74 to close, however, and tied Shawn Koch at 208.
Hebert will play in next week?s Buick Open and later this summer in the PGA Championship via his finish in the PGA Professional National Championship (20th). He won that title in 2008.
