Garety Wins Women’s Senior Championship

HARBOR SPRINGS — Joan Garety (Ada) was the 13th GAM Women?s Senior champion with her rounds of 77-75 ? 152 at Little Traverse Bay GC in Harbor Springs. Garety did not have one, single three-putt during the tournament which she said went a long way toward keeping her at the top of the leader board 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Sue Campbell (Kalamazoo).

?The greens there are tricky because everything rolls toward the big lake,? said Garety, 53. ?I was able to keep it in line and make the second putt.?

Garety actually noted on her map of the golf course where Traverse Bay was in relation to each green.

?I?ve been playing golf long enough to know that when someone who knows the course and plays the course all the time tells you something like that, ? said Garety, ?you should take their advice.?

In addition to solid putting, Garety said she was never in serious trouble on the fairway during the tournament either. That enabled her to enjoy the picturesque Little Traverse Bay course while snaring her victory.

?That is just a wonderful golf course up there,? she said. ?It?s almost impossible to pick a favorite hole but I have to say the very first hole where you are way up high and you can see the big lake in the distance was really? something. You have to hit straight down the fairway and it goes forever. I was able to do that both days and hit a short iron to the green.?
