ST. CLAIR – Rochester Hills siblings Amy Meier (Ohio State University) and Christine Meier (Michigan State University) will face off tomorrow in match play semifinals at the 94th Michigan Women’s Amateur at St. Clair Country Club. Call it a Big Ten rival match-up if you will, but the girls say it is more about sisterhood.
“I think it is more about sibling rivalry than Big Ten rivalry,” said Amy.
In a round where there was only one bogey, Amy defeated Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc/University of Michigan) 2&1.
“It was really a great match — the kind of match that is just a great test,” said Amy. “It was just really hard to go one up because both of us were playing well and there was only one bogey in the whole match.”
Christine ousted Sarah Hoffman (Saline/Grand Valley State) from the quarterfinals of match play 3&2.
“I was just sinking a lot of putts,” said Christine. “Both Amy and I are playing really well this week so tomorrow should be a great match.”
The sisters have played against each other in stroke play events but never before in match play.
“It will be fun but I think there will be a lot of underlying tension,” said Amy.
The Meier sisters tee off in the semifinals Friday at 8 a.m.
Natalie Brehm (Mount Pleasant/Michigan State University) will face off in the second semifinal against Lindsey Lammers (Milan/University of Detroit Mercy).
Lammers led in her match against Maddi Massa (Holt/Michigan State University) most of the afternoon and ended up winning 2&1. Brehm topped Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc/University of Michigan) 2&1.
Lammers was the 2010 GAM Girls’ Junior Champion which was the first tournament where she experienced match play. So far, she is a big fan.
“This is only the second tournament where I’ve played match play but so far I’m undefeated so I guess I like it,” said Lammers. “I was up and down today which is what match play is all about.”
Lammers said it was her putt on the par-5 13th that gave her momentum in the quarterfinal.
“I sunk a long putt which put me 3 up and once I did that I knew all I had to do was shoot par the rest of the way,” said Lammers.
In her early match, Lammers ousted 2009 defending champion Britney Hamilton (Lake Orion/Western Michigan University) 2&1.
“That felt awesome!” said Lammers.
Brehm said she did not do anything spectacular in her rounds but played consistently all day.
“I started off good in my second round, then lost it a little, but I got it back,” said Brehm. “I made a nice putt on 17 and that clinched it.”
Brehm likes the fact that if she and Christine Meier win their semi final matches, it could be an all-Spartan final.
“That would be so much fun!” said Brehm. She was the 2009 Michigan Women’s Amateur runner up.
