New Faces advance to “Sweet?16” at 98th Michigan Amateur

??????????? LINDEN, MI ? After a two hour and 34 minute weather delay, the players of the 98th Michigan Amateur Championship were brought back on the course at Spring Meadows Country Club in hope of determining the ?Sweet 16?. Unfortunately, one match did not finish due to darkness: Eric Lilleboe (Okemos) is 1 UP on Nate Golomb (Wyoming) thru 11 holes.

Of the fifteen golfers that have moved on, only two are making repeat appearances in the Sweet Sixteen. This group includes: 2007 & 2008 runner-up Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile), and semi-finalist Tom Werkmeister (Kentwood).

?This is my third time making it to sweet 16, it used to be one of my goals, but my expectations are much higher now. I maybe have a chance to hold the trophy if things go my way, but there?s a lot of golf still yet to be played, said Werkmeister (4-time Grand Rapids City Champion and 4- time West Michigan Amateur Champion). ?Werkmeister meets 2002 US Senior Amateur Champion & 10-time Spring Meadows Club Champion, Greg Reynolds (Grand Blanc) at 9:00 a.m. Reynold?s is entering his morning match as the oldest Michigan Amateur player at the age of 62 to make it into the? sweet 16? matches.

The group of 15 are young players, as 11 of the players left are 24 or younger, including: Joey Garber (Petoskey) aged 17, Alex Lyall (Novi) 18, Casey Olsen (Okemos) 18, Ben Peacock (Marshall) 18, Matt Thompson (Battle Creek) 19, Tommy Thompson (Davision) 20, Martin Jeppesen (Ann Arbor) 21, Andrew Ladwig (East Grand Rapids) 21, Cuzzort 22, Michael King (Saginaw) 23, and Kasey Hocquard (Choboygan) 24.

?The best advice I?ve gotten so far, is play your own game; don?t play your opponent, don?t watch his shot, you catch yourself playing him instead of concentrating on your own game,? said Joey Garber who defeated the 36-hole medalist, Joseph Juszczyk 4 & 2 and also defeated his second opponent, Ryan Johnson in 20 holes.

The Championship continues on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. The quarterfinal matches will take place on Friday afternoon, with the semifinals and final match scheduled for Saturday.
