Course Challenges Players at First Round of

Michigan Amateur Championship at Oakhurst Golf & Country Club

Clarkston
, MI – Thanks to the difficult conditions at Oakhurst Golf & Country Club, there were plenty of high scores in the first round of stroke play qualifying at the 99th Michigan Amateur Championship on Tuesday, June 22, 2010. The championship field of 156 Michigan players faced a constant swirling wind, 3 to 4 1/2-inch rough, and green speeds stimping at 10 1/2. Only two players shot under par, and 71 players shot 80 or over.

Leading in the clubhouse with scores of 70, are defending champion, Tom Werkmeister of Kentwood and Matt Thompson of Battle Creek. Both Werkmeister and Thompson attributed their solid rounds to consistency and talked about the difficulty of the Oakhurst G&CC greens.

“I got off to a good start and turned at one over”, said Matthew Thompson. “I birdied holes #16 and #17 which calmed my nerves. This course fits my game. It’s probably one of the toughest courses that the Michigan Amateur Championship has ever been played on.”

Werkmeister had this to say about his first round at the Michigan Amateur Championship at Oakhurst G&CC, “I played really badly yesterday during my practice round and didn’t know what was going to happen today,”   “I was consistent. I had two birdies on holes #5 and #7 and one bogey. I played the tough par 3’s even par – so I was happy with that.  It was very windy and we did get caught in the rain early on but overall I’m happy and ready for tomorrow.”

Despite the obvious difficulty, players were very complimentary of the host course.

Russ Cunningham, who won the 2002 GAM Championship at Oakhurst G&CC, had this to say about the conditions at the 99th Michigan Amateur Championship, “the wind protects this course and the greens are severe enough that you can’t get it close to the hole.  When asked about the difficultly of a golf course based on weather conditions, I use the analogy of bowling; think of it as if you are playing different bowling lanes with different speeds and you have no idea where or how fast your ball is going to go. That’s what happens when the wind is blowing hard and green speeds change. The players then have to regroup and try to figure out club selection and how hard to hit a putt. This course is challenging but fun to play.”

Stroke play continues Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. Following Wednesday’s round, the 36-hole stroke play medalist will be determined and a hole-by-hole playoff will take place, if necessary, to cut the field to an even 64 players for match play. Match play begins Thursday morning with two rounds of matches on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

99th Michigan Amateur Championship at Oakhurst G&CC – Quote Sheet
Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Tom Werkmeister (Kentwood) – Defending Champion,  age 42     34-36-70
“I played really badly yesterday during my practice round and didn’t know what was going to happen today, said Werkmeister.   “I was consistent. I had two birdies (#5 and #7) and one bogey. I played the tough par 3’s even par – so I was happy with that.  It was very windy and we did get caught in the rain early on but overall I’m happy and ready for tomorrow.”
Matthew Thompson (Battle Creek) college player at UofM, age 20       37-33-70
“I got off to a good start and turned at one over”, said Matthew Thompson. “ I birdied holes # 16 and 17 which calmed my nerves. This course fits my game. It’s probably one of the toughest courses that the Michigan Amateur Championship has been played on. The greens are so tough and there were a lot of nasty pin placements. You have to pick the right spots or else you’re dead out here.”
Greg Reynolds (Grand Blanc) age 63     37-35-72
“I played pretty solidly today”, said Reynolds after completing his first round at the 99th Michigan Amateur Championship.  “I didn’t put myself in trouble but I did three putt when the rain hit us. It came down pretty hard all at once. It’s been at least 7 years since I’ve played this course – when they hosted the U.S. Open qualifier in 2003, but I didn’t remember much of the course. You have to know how to read the greens.”
Russ Cunningham (DeWitt)  GAM Player of the Decade, age  39    40-36-76
“I hit it in the hay on the first home and made a good double bogey”, said Cunningham. “On my second hole, I three putted. I think I was really frustrated and not concentrating . I won the GAM Championship here  and had the course record (65) at one time. It’s much more difficult and different golf course today. The wind protects this course and the greens are severe enough that you can’t get it close to the hole.  When asked about the difficultly of a golf course based on weather conditions, I use the analogy of bowling; think of it as if you are playing different lanes with different speeds and you have no idea where or how fast our ball is going to go. That’s what happens when the wind is blowing hard and green speeds change. The players then have to regroup and try to figure out club selection and how hard to hit a putt.”
Matthew DeMarois (Brighton) Twin Brother, age 14   40-43-83
“I played pretty good even though my score doesn’t reflect it”, said Matthew DeMarois. “None of my putts were falling today. I gave myself plenty of chances. This is my first Michigan Amateur Championship and the setup is quite difficult with tough pins. I play golf every day and practice at least one hour every day. My home course is Lakelands Golf & Country Club and we have a great junior program. There’s no competition between my twin brother and me.”
David DeMarois (Brighton) Twin Brother, age 14   43-43-86
“I hit my driver really well today”, said David DeMarois after competing in his first Michigan Amateur Championship. “ I had trouble putting these greens. They have so many undulations, it’s incredible.  I hit every putt way too hard. I’m going to go practice my putting and hopefully I can shoot a low round tomorrow to make it into match play.
