EVANS SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO 25 HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS FROM MICHIGAN

GOLF, IL (January 25, 2008) The Evans Scholars Foundation recently awarded 25 new Evans Scholarships to caddies from the state of Michigan for the 2008-09 academic year.

These young men and women have excelled in academics and in service to their schools and communities, said Don Johnson, president and CEO of the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation. We welcome them to the Evans Scholars family and look forward to their continued success as college students.

The Foundation made the awards recently following individual interviews with each scholarship candidate at a January 10, 2008, Evans Scholars Selection Meeting at Kent Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan, conducted by the WGA/ESF and the Golf Association of Michigan. Additional candidate interviews will take place this spring in Michigan with the expectation that several more deserving caddies from Michigan will be awarded Evans Scholarships for fall 2008, Johnson said.

All Evans Scholars are golf caddies who earned their full tuition and housing college scholarships based on four criteria: strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The program has a college graduation rate in excess of 90 percent, with an overall grade point average for all Evans Scholars in college above a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Evans Scholars live in an Evans Scholarship House at one of the 14 chapters in the Evans Scholars Program; Evans Scholars from Michigan attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor or Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Currently, 835 deserving golf caddies are enrolled in college as Evans Scholars, including 50 at the University of Michigan and 66 at Michigan State University. More than 8,600 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars, including 652 from the University of Michigan and 708 from Michigan State University, since the program was founded in 1930 by Charles Chick Evans Jr., famed Chicago amateur golfer and winner of the 1916 U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. The Western Golf Association has administered the Chick Evans Scholarship Program since its inception in 1930 through the Evans Scholars Foundation. The Program has grown to become the largest privately funded scholarship program in the nation.

Funds for the scholarships come mostly from contributions by more than 500 member clubs, 36,000 WGA Par Club members and 100,000 golfers in the WGA Bag Tag Program. Evans Scholar Alumni donate over $3 million annually to the program.

The scholarship program is also supported by 23 affiliated golf associations and from proceeds generated by the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA TOUR Playoff events in the PGA TOURs 2008 FedExCup competition. The BMW Championship will be held September 1-7 at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
