Inexperience and Experience meet for Final Four at Michigan Amateur Championship
ROYAL OAK ? There were plenty of close calls at Red Run Golf Club on Friday, as three out of the four quarterfinal matches lasted at least 18 holes in the 96th Michigan Amateur Championship. During the morning matches, five of the eight matches went at least 17 holes.
The final four features an interesting mix of experience and inexperience, as the 1992 and 1999 Michigan Amateur Champion Randy Lewis (Alma) and the 2007 runner-up, Ryan Brehm (Mt Pleasant) are the two players with experience heading into the final four. Joining Lewis and Brehm in the final four are Michigan State junior-to-be Steven Cuzzort (Grosse Ile), Northwestern senior-to-be Dan Doyle (Rochester).
Cuzzort advanced to the semifinals after a 20 hole victory over defending champion, Greg Davies (West Bloomfield). Cuzzort will face Doyle in the semifinal match beginning at 8:00 a.m. The two have played each other in junior golf and both are anxious to play each other again.
Doyle said, ?I?m looking forward to tomorrow?s match, and yes it could turn out to be a big ten tournament.?
The other semifinal match will feature MSU senior-to-be Brehm and veteran Lewis at 8:15 a.m. This sets up a possible match-up between Michigan State teammates.
The final will be played 45 minutes after the semifinal matches end.
