The Beauty of the Wilderness Beckons You-To Forest Dunes

The Beauty of the Wilderness Beckons You…To Forest Dunes Golf Club In Rustic Roscommon, Michigan

If you think you’ve finalized your golf trips for the 2013 season, you haven’t…not until you’ve added Forest Dunes Golf Club to the list.  It’s akin to being in the middle of golf course heaven, surrounded by the majestic Huron National Forest and dotted with the geologically natural sands that constitute the “Dunes”, scattered majestically across the course.  In addition to golf, travelers can experience biking and hiking on miles of wilderness trails and world-class fly-fishing and canoeing on the Au Sable River.

In spite of its youthfulness (approximately 10 years since its inception), Forest Dunes Golf Club is a seasoned venue for golfers from over 28 states, Canada and Korea.  It has gained recognition, not only because of the beauty of its Tom Weiskopf design but also to the rise in ratings by Golf Digest magazine.  Once rated number 113 on the Golf Digest list of best courses to play, it is currently number #99.  Don’t be surprised if the upward spiral continues going into the future.

Although Forest Dunes is a magnificent track that will test the skills of the low handicap player, its wide fairways and large greens deem it forgiving and enjoyable for higher handicap players.  In addition, the course offers five sets of tees and an additional combo tee between tees II and III.  Each hole has a name suitable to its design:  Eagle’s Perch, Gamble, Forest’s Edge, Hideaway and Eagle Chance are just a few.   (You can find out why when you get there.)  The entire course is well-manicured, but you can’t help but notice the attention placed on the finer details, e.g., the use of pavers for paths instead of the usual gravel or dirt and the Roman Numeral-labeled holes.  It’s these small details that separate the extraordinary golf courses from the ordinary ones.

New this season, Forest Dunes offers lodging right on the course site.  Their new Lake AuSable Lodge is just adjacent to the main clubhouse and has its own parking lot and a scenic-panoramic view of the front holes of the golf course.  This “stay and play” lodging is an added attraction to an already great piece of real estate.  Although the new Lake AuSable Lodge currently features 14 luxury (perfectly described!) rooms and three suites, it is designed to be added onto for future growth and expansion.  Rooms offer king and double-queen accommodations, while a pair of second level suites features two bedrooms with two queen beds each.  Both rooms and suites offer flat screen televisions, wireless internet and private patios and balconies.  In addition to the Lodge, Forest Dunes operates six beautiful cottage homes for rent, on the shores of Lake AuSable.  Between these two housing availabilities, one would never need to venture away from the golf property…it’s all right there, wrapped up in one neat package called Forest Dunes Golf Club.  Add it to your bucket list for 2013.
