Golfweek Releases 9th Annual Amateur Issue
Orlando, FL- Golfweek, the magazine preferred by serious golfers, once again marks the beginning of the competitive amateur golf season with the publishing of its Amateur Golf issue.
The May 3rd issue features the stories of Jim Mahoney of Waverly, Ga., and Ella Gates of Napa, Calif., who were recognized as the Americans who played the most rounds of golf in 2007. According to the USGA’s Golf Handicap and Information System, Jim recorded the most rounds of any male last year with 502, and Ella, at the age of 86, played the most rounds for a woman with 275.
“At Golfweek, we cover competitive golf at every level, but we regard the amateur game as our heart and soul, and relish the opportunity each spring to deliver the Amateur Issue,” said Golfweek editor Jeff Babineau. “When we can relate stories such as those of Jim Mahoney (502 rounds last year), Ella Gates (who played 275 rounds at age 86) and our decorated Local Legends, it gives us a great deal of enjoyment. We’re writing about people who love the game as much as we do, and their longstanding passion for golf is inspiring.”
For the seventh consecutive year Golfweek’s Amateur Issue recognizes the accomplishments of six “Local Legends” whose resumes are impressive, but may not receive many accolades beyond a local or state level. This years “Local Legend” profiles include Casey Boyne (Pacific Grove, Calif.), who is an accomplished amateur player and has been a caddie at Pebble Beach for 27 years; Don Allen (Rochester, N.Y.), who made the cut in three consecutive Masters Tournaments in the 1960s; and Jake Waldock (Fort Myers, Fla.), who won club championships in six different decades. The issue also includes the profiles of “Local Legends” Charlie Green (Cardross, Scotland) and Michigan residents Syd Wells (Menominee) and Pete Green (Franklin).
“Golfweek’s annual Amateur Issue signifies what differentiates Golfweek from our competitors for Golfweek not only reports on professional golf, but Golfweek goes deep on amateur golf as well,” said Golfweek publisher Terry Olson. “It is in this very special issue that we turn the spotlight on the amateurs, the local legends and our talented writers tell their untold stories.”
The Amateur Issue also includes a report on the 108th North & South Amateur Championship held annually at Pinehurst and the increased importance in this year’s tournament due to the U.S. Amateur Championship being staged at the legendary North Carolina resort six weeks later. Other features include a look at the storied career of Betty Jameson, who after winning two U.S. Women’s Amateurs became one of the founding members of the LPGA, and Golfweek’s James Achenbach addresses the growth of competitive senior amateur tournaments and the increased interest in senior player rankings.
