HUTCHISON’S RETAINS MICHIGAN OPEN LEAD
WASHINGTON, MI- Randy Hutchison started fast and finished strong to increase his lead after three rounds of the 94th Michigan Open presented by Lincoln and DTE Energy. The 24-year old Hooter’s Tour player has a 3-stroke lead over Matt Thompson after shooting a bogey free 4-under 68 at The Orchards Golf Club.
“It’s good to birdie the first two holes,” the former Michigan State Spartan said. “It kind of takes the nerves away”. Hutchison then ran a string of 12-consecutive pars by “hitting fairways and greens and not having any putts over 30-feet.”
“When Matt (Thompson) got to within one-stroke of me after his birdie on the 11th I decided it was time to put my foot on the gas.” The result was two more birdies on 15 and 16 before paring out for his bogey-less round.
Thompson, a senior to be at the University of Michigan entered the third round two strokes off the lead and “had to scramble more today. Randy got off to such a good start I quit watching him and just paid attention to my game.” The Battle Creek native finished with a 3-under 69.
Joey Garber, another U-M standout made a big move up the leaderboard with a 5-under 67. He is tied for third at 8-under par with another with former Wolverine Brian Ottenweller of Grand Rapids.
Hutchison has played in the final group of the Michigan Open on two occasions but has never slept on the lead. “I’ll just go out and try to hit fairways and greens tomorrow. You can’t get in too much trouble when you do that.” Thompson on the other hand “has to do something special tomorrow. But I get more comfortable on the course everyday.”
This is the 94th Michigan Open. There is a $70,000 purse with a $10,000 share for the winner. The Orchards is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design with many national awards under its belt. The golf course is located on a 525-acre residential community. The course rating is 74.5 with a slope of 136 from the championship tees. 72 players made the cut.
