A mix of veterans and newcomers advance to Sweet Sixteen at Michigan Amateur
PORTAGE There were relatively few surprises during the first two rounds of match play at the Michigan Amateur Championship on The Moors, as five of the top ten seeds won both matches and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.
Leading the way was medalist Randy Hutchison (Traverse City) with a convincing 4&2 victory over Aaron Klemm (Ludington) and a 1 Up (21 holes) victory over Tommy Yamaoka (Zeeland). Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile), the 2007 Michigan Amateur runner-up, also won both of his matches.
Local golfer and a Moors member, Adam Anderson (Kalamazoo) defeated Casey Baker (Ann Arbor) on the 18th hole 1 Up with a crowd of 200 people watching his every move. This Cinderella story started out with Anderson being called as an alternate into the Championship on Tuesday morning 45 minutes before the tee time. Tonight, he is sitting at the Sweet 16 table looking forward to representing his club, The Moors, in tomorrows match against Adam Hogue (Plymouth) at 9:10 a.m.
The group of sixteen is rather young, as 11 of the players left are 25 or younger. Chris Mory (Haslett) is the youngest player in the field at age 18.
The Championship continues on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. There are several intriguing matchups, including the clash of the Spartan teammates of senior player Hutchison vs. sophomore Phillip Snow (Northville). One notable fact is that Snows father is the current linebacker coach for the Detroit Lions.
The quarterfinal matches will take place on Friday afternoon, with the semifinals and final match scheduled for Saturday.
