INNER-CITY and Rural Youth Converge at Blythefield Country Club to learn the art of Golf.

Grand Rapids, MI – July 15, 2013

The President Ford Council, Boy Scouts of America is hosting the 7th Annual Boy Scouts of America Golf Outing on Monday, August 19, 2013, at Blythefield Country Club to raise funds for Scoutreach. Scoutreach is a Scouting program for inner-city and rural youth giving them the opportunity to participate in Scouting activities. The mission of Scoutreach is to “provide inner-city and rural youth with Scouting opportunities designed to develop character, leadership skills, and respect for themselves and others by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.”

As part of the golf outing, Scoutreach Scouts attend a golf clinic, led by community volunteers, from 10:00AM-11:00AM. The volunteers help the Scouts learn a little about golf and a lot about having fun. This interaction builds personal relationships and camaraderie between the youths and their teachers. Some of the Scouts have never held a golf club. The clinic is part of the annual golf outing fundraiser that helps cover the $75.00 cost per youth for program supplies, registration fees, insurance, field trips to camp and staff support.

The President Ford Council is committed to insuring that all youth, regardless of their income or social status, have the opportunity to be a part of the Scouting experience.  In 2012, over 6,000 youth were served through Scoutreach in after-school and summer programs in Kent, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana and Ottawa counties. The program serves boys ages 7-10 in Cub Scouts, ages 11-18 in Boy Scouts and young men and women ages 13-20 in the Venturing Program.

The Boy Scouts of America Golf Outing is supported by local businesses, individual donations and golfer fees. Great contest prizes, a Silent Auction, lunch, snacks, dinner, golf cart, use of the driving range and putting green, and a golfer gift bag are included.  Golfers can go to www.michiganscouting.org for information and sign up before August 12 by calling Suzie Blake at 616-785-2662 ext. 204 at the DeVos Family Center for Scouting.
