Obermeyer Captures Women’s Senior Amateur Title

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Cindy Obermeyer (Birmingham) completed an impressive run of upsets to win the 10th Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur presented by Pepsi. In the Championship Match, Obermeyer defeated Lauri Ponikiewski (Livonia), 3 & 2, at Mt. Pleasant Country Club.

“It feels just awesome to win,” Obermeyer said. “My driver and irons were great both days, and I putted well enough obviously. This course was really wonderful. It was in great shape and it was challenging, but fair.”

Obermeyer entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed in a field of eight, but used her first-round upset of top-seeded Joan Garety (Ada) yesterday to bolster her to the title

“Beating the top-seeded player in the tournament on the first day really gave me a fair amount of confidence,” Obermeyer said.

In the ‘B’ Flight, Chris Zeigler (Kalamazoo) defeated Cynthia Andrews (Saginaw) 4 & 3. Zeigler was seeded No. 4 in the flight entering the championship and defeated top-seeded Irene Sauve (Clio) in the semifinals.

Mt. Pleasant Country Club member Jean Murray (Mt. Pleasant) won the title in the ‘C’ Flight by defeating Kim Noe (Flushing) in 19 holes.

Suzanne Madej (Detroit) won the longest match of the day by beating Diane Kurtz (Metamora) in 22 holes for the ‘D’ Flight title, and Jane Schnoor (Rockford) defeated Anna Butzner (Grand Rapids) 2 & 1 to win the ‘E’ Flight.
