MWGA State Championship at Lake Forest GC

The 30th Michigan Women’s Golf Association State Championship, open to all amateur female golfers, was held at Lake Forest Golf Course in Ann Arbor, MI, Saturday and Sunday, July 26-27. 44 women competed in three flights plus the Collegiate/Student division.

 

The Medalist, again placing first in the Collegiate/Student division with a 2-day gross total of 138 was Kimberly Dinh of Midland, MI. Kim, a senior at University of Wisconsin, bettered her 2013 score of 143 by five strokes, shooting a 69-69 this year. Runner-up with a 142 was Kelli Oride from Lihue, HI and junior at Notre Dame. Other collegiate players were Patrice Brooks, Jeryl and Kellie Schudel.

                                                   

The State Champion and first low gross winner in flight 1 was Theresa Delcamp of Grand Blanc, MI, who scored a 2-day gross total of 159. This was Terry’s fourth MWGA State Championship. The first low net winner in flight 1 with a 141 total was Lori Rogers of Washington, MI, repeating her 2013 low net winning. Second place low gross was awarded to Joan Garety of Ada, MI, who posted a 163 total. Second place low net in this flight went to Debra Horning of Bloomfield Hills, MI, who posted a 142.

 

The first low gross winner of flight 2 was Sonia Pysh of Henrico, VA, who scored a 183 total, and the low net in flight 2 was won by Yvette Johnson of Farmington Hills, MI, with a 147.Second low gross with a 183 was Ruth Wilson of Chandler, AZ, and second low net with a 148 was Karen Strock of Manchester, MI.

 

Flight 3 first place winners were Kathy Janes of Royal Oak, MI, with a low 2-day gross score of 198, and the flight low net winner plus tournament Overall Low Net winner was Pragna Shah of Bloomfield Hills, MI, who scored a 138 net for the two days. Second low gross in flight 3 was won by Nancy Serra of Clarkston, MI with a 199 and second low net by Denise Buechel of Walled Lake, MI with a 146.

Upcoming MWGA Events including the MWGA Girls Golf Program

9-Hole, 3-Person Junior/Mentor Scramble

 

The next MWGA competition will be a 2-Woman Scramble at Hunters Ridge GC in Howell, MI on Saturday, August 9. This will be followed by the MWGA 9-Hole 3-Person Junior/Mentor Scramble at Rouge Park GC in Detroit, on Tuesday August 19. The 9-hole scramble is part of the MWGA Girls Golf Program, providing lessons and golfing experience to juniors aged 7-14 for a nominal fee. On August 19, a luncheon and awards program is planned after the golf, which begins with registration at 9:15am and a 10am shotgun. Entry fee for playing adults is $22, playing juniors $16 or lunch only at $12. Scholarships are always available for juniors. The final August MWGA competition will be a fun format, a 4-Woman Cha, Cha, Cha on Monday, August 18, at Atlas Valley Country Club in Grand Blanc, MI. On one hole, one golfer’s gross and net scores (Cha) will be used, the next hole two golfers’ scores (Cha, Cha) and then the Cha, Cha, Cha three scores. This format is repeated through the 18 holes to get the team final scores. Join MWGA for this fun competition on a lovely private course with play beginning at 9am.

 

Unless otherwise noted, entry fees for MWGA events are $63 for members and $73 for non-members for golf, cart, prizes and often range balls. For an additional $10 golfers may participate in extra contests such as closest-to-the flag, chip-ins and skins. A $20 certificate will be awarded to a first-time participating non-member which may be used toward a MWGA membership, which is $35 for new, student and senior members. All events are flighted so a USGA index is needed, which may be obtained through MWGA. Without the index, players will play at scratch.
