EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State sophomore golfer Sam Weatherhead was named Big Ten Men’s Golfer of the Week. Weatherhead captured his first collegiate title, tying for first at the Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, S.C.

Weatherhead was tied for first with a 2-under 214 (71-72-71). He helped guide the Spartans to a third-place finish at the tournament.

The sophomore from Grand Rapids, Mich., was the first Spartan to capture a tournament title this season. He was also the first Michigan State player to earn Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors this year. The last MSU golfer to earn the honor was Matthew Moseley on March 14, 2013. He is the 12th golfer to be honored by the conference since 2000.

Weatherhead won the title one season after sophomore Charlie Netzel won the title at the Colleton River Collegiate, which is hosted by the Spartans.

Michigan State is back in action on Sunday, March 15 in Naples, Fla., at the Tails Park Challenge.
