KANSAS CITY, Mo.- The Western Michigan golf team recorded its highest finish of the 2015 spring season, placing fifth at the Kansas City Shootout, hosted by UMKC. The Broncos had a team-total of 914, shooting round of 306 and 298 on Monday and a final round of 310 on Tuesday.
Freshman Julia Champion led Western Michigan with her best finish as a Bronco, tying for 10th at 10-over par 226 (75-74-77). She was one of just three players from the field to go one under on par 3 scoring and shot for par on 39 of the 54 holes.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Watkins tied for 14th at 13-over 229 (79-77-73) and shot her best round on Monday firing a 73.
Junior Chloe Lawrie also had a top-20 finish, tying for 19th at 14-over 230 (77-72-81). She carded WMU’s best round of the tournament with a 72 in round two Monday. Lawrie had a team-best six birdies over course of play.
Also in the lineup for Western Michigan was senior Laura Moutrey (77-78-79–234) and sophomore Anna Wilcoxson (77-75-83–235).
Middle Tennessee State shot three rounds of 292 for a total of 876 to take home the team title in the event by 34 shots over Missouri State. Middle Tennessee State’s Allie Knight was individual medalist at plus-1 (76-72-69–217) after defeating teammate Samantha Gotcher on the second hole of the playoff.
Western Michigan heads to the 2015 Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green this weekend, April 11-12.
