Campbell Captures Michigan Senior Women’s Championship

Yesterday, Susan Campbell, Kalamazoo, captured the 7th Michigan Senior Women?s Championship title in a classic match play duel over the tree-lined fairways of Arbor Hills Golf Club in Jackson. Campbell and her opponent, Maureen Whitehead, Charlevoix, put on a short game clinic throughout the first 18 holes. Campbell?s approach shots were so accurate, she reached the fifth hole before she was forced to two-putt. Both players used their experience to manage the course, placing their tee shots well on the doglegs, avoiding the manicured bunkers, and carefully accepting their two putts on the most treacherous greens. Campbell won the first, fifth, and ninth holes, while Whitehead came back to take the second, eleventh, and fifteenth holes. In a great show of sportsmanship and camaraderie, the opponents congratulated each other on the eighteenth green with smiles and high fives as the regulation match ended all square. The match continued into a sudden death playoff, and eventually ended on the second sudden death hole when Campbell creatively played up the fourteenth fairway after an errant tee shot went right. Whitehead had previously won this title in 2005. This was Campbell?s first Michigan Senior Women?s title, having been runner-up last year at Gaylord Country Club.
