In the heart of the Downriver area is Riverview Highlands
Golf Course, a 27-hole facility opened in 1973. The course is owned and
operated by the City of Riverview. From the top, there are spectacular views of
downriver and downtown Detroit.
The course is broken down into three distinct nine hole
courses: Gold, Red, and Blue. The Gold course is the original course that
opened in 1973. It was followed by the Red course opening in 1976, and then by
the Blue course in 1982. The Blue course has a stream that runs through it,
leaving 7 of the 9 holes with water in play. According to Director of Golf,
Mike Kettler, “Our 27 holes of championship golf is very playable for all types
of golfers, from beginners to more skilled players.”
In 2006, The Detroit Free Press ran an article with Metro
Detroit’s toughest holes, and Number 8 on the Blue course made that list. In
2016, Riverview Highlands customers voted the course a Top 3 golf course
through Click On Detroit’s annual voting for Metro Detroit’s Best of list.
All three courses feature a mildly rolling terrain with
mature trees, plentiful water hazards and strategic bunkering. The Gold course
is the overall longest course of the group, but each course has plenty to offer
golfers of all skill levels. The full yardage information is:
Gold Course:
Blue 3,406 yards
White 3,164 yards
Gold 2,996 yards
Red 2,597 yards
Red Course:
Blue 3,266 yards
White 3,148 yards
Gold 2,972 yards
Red 2,543 yards
Blue Course:
Blue 3,220 yards
White 3,032 yards
Gold 2,837 yards
Red 2,723 yards
Riverview Highlands also has a practice facility that opened
in 2000. “It features 3 practice holes, a par 4 and two par 3’s” says Kettler.
“There is a 100-yard putting green with 18 holes in it and we also have a
practice chipping green with bunker.” Additionally, there are two very large
teeing areas, one on the bottom of the hill and a second that is located on the
top of a closed portion of the Riverview Land Preserve.
The pro shop at Riverview Highlands sells gloves, balls,
hats, shirts, shoes and jackets, along with some other miscellaneous golfing
needs. There is also a small snack bar in the Golf Shop for golfers to grab a
quick snack and beverage while on the go.
The course has nightly leagues during the week, along with
outings that play the course throughout the year.
