Twin Beach Country Club Hosting First GAM 12-and-Under Championship

Written By: Greg Johnson

WEST BLOOMFIELD – The first GAM 12-and-Under Junior Championship is being hosted by Twin Beach Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 12-13, and Twin Beach is hosting a GAM tournament for the first time.

The tournament is a breakaway from the GAM Junior Stroke Play Championship. The new tournament provides the 12-and-under age division boys and girls their own GAM competitions.

The field of boys and girls will play nine-hole rounds of stroke play each day.

Twin Beach has nine holes, including two double greens, but 18 different tees played from four different tee positions for a variety of different angles to the greens and what amounts to an 18-hole experience between 5,066 and 6,299 yards.

The original holes were built in 1928 and ’29 and opened in the middle of the Great Depression. Developer Frank Salter did considerable work on the course and the real-estate development in the area in the 1950s. In 1958 a comprehensive program for watering the fairways was initiated.

The Twin Beach name is believed to come from two local beaches that were located nearby. A subdivision and the club share the name.

Jim McGuigan is the PGA general manager, Jordan Weinger is the PGA head professional and Brian Gentner, GCSAA, is the superintendent.

The tournament is designed as an introductory tournament. Entries were open to youngsters who have not yet reached their 13th birthday by August 13, 2024, and are residents of Michigan or are members of a GAM Member Club at time of entry.
