Michigan Women’s Golf Association (MWGA) July 14-15, 2018 State Championship at Timber Ridge
Written By: shelton@mwgolf.org

July 21, 2018, Farmington, Mich. Cynthia Pinkard, Technology Director, Webmaster and member of the Competition & Events Committee, shared, “Timber Ridge definitely presented the challenge and our "games" (skins, closest to the flag and chip-ins) gave all players a chance to win a little extra.”

She congratulate all of the winners, especially the overall winner, Audrey Akins, who shot a 155 (83, 72), just edging out seven-time winner Joan Garety who posted a 156 (73, 83).  All results from the State Championship can be found at www.mw.golforg , including hole-by-hole scores, skins and a list of the MWGA State Champions.

There was one eagle during the two day event, made by Helga Toriello, who posted a 2 on the tricky 7th hole, a 279 yard par 4. This hole has a 90 degree dogleg facing a large bunker on the tee shot, a lateral hazard on the right, and a narrow water hazard between the bunker and the uphill, sloping, undulating green. Of the 100 times that hole was played during the competition, there were only 12 pars, no birdies, and 59 double bogeys or more.  Way to go Helga!!!

We had several new members and first time participants at this year’s event, Kim Smith, Ann Busby and Jane Schnoor, all from the Grand Rapids area, and Katie Boyd a member of the Saginaw Valley State University golf team from Waterford.  Katie, the colligate player, shot 166 gross (87, 79) 150 net. It was really great to see so many familiar faces along with the new members and guests.

Special thanks goes to our volunteer “on course” officials, Sara Wold, Francine Pegues, Martha MacIntosh and Karen Strock. It takes a very strong and committed team to conduct our competitions and our Competition Directors, Lu Stockton and Barb Coury, along with our Competitions and Events Office (CEO), Monica Oliver, Cynthia Pinkard, Denise Buechel, and Deb Horning, along with our Handicap Director Sue Madej are instrumental in the success of our events. Thanks also to other volunteers, Terry MacPherson (50/50 raffle), Cindy Hill and Sonia Pysh (photos), plus Jane Kersjes (announcements) for all their help.
