Apple Mountain Golf Club Hosting 7th Michigan Senior Net Amateur

Written By: Greg Johnson

FREELAND – Apple Mountain Golf Club will host the 7th Michigan Senior Net Amateur Championship presented by Michigan Golf Live on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 22-23.

The tournament features senior male golfers over age 55 with GAM/USGA handicap indexes lower than 20.4. This year’s field of over 70 golfers will play for the title over two days and 36 holes of net stroke play competition.

Apple Mountain’s course, which opened for the 1998 season, was designed by John Sandford of Florida-based Sanford Ferris Design and in 2018 drainage and sand improvements were made to greenside bunkers.

Sanford created a championship course with four sets of tee boxes on each holes and expansive fairways. Water and elevation changes are part of the challenge on a scenic course that can be played as long as 6,900 yards.

The full-service public/resort facility has built a reputation for great course conditions under superintendent Chris Ballosh. Chad Maxim is the PGA head golf professional. Learn more at applemountain.com.

The Senior Net Amateur is among five Net championships presented as part of the GAM’s continuing effort to provide competition for members of all playing ability levels on some of the state’s top golf courses.

Last year, Brighton’s Art Black made a 35-foot putt for net eagle on the 18th hole to secure the 6th Michigan Senior Net Amateur Championship at Lakes of Taylor Golf Club. It was his first senior title and second GAM net tournament title. He is returning to this year’s field to defend.
