Eight Teams Advance to Finals of 33rd GAM Net Team Championship

FLINT – Eight Teams, including a team that included the presenting sponsor, Bill Hobson of Michigan Golf Live, emerged from a long qualifying day for the 33rd GAM Net Team Championship at Flint Golf Club Monday.

Those eight teams – out of 80 that started the day and played in a morning wave and afternoon wave – advanced to the final day of the championship on Oct. 11 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville.

Trophies were handed out to the first and second-place teams in the two waves.

Morning Wave champions were Mike Coles of Sterling Heights and Brian Maltese of Shelby Township, who shot a best-ball 13-under 59 net score.

Afternoon Wave champions were Bryan Dutton of Wixom and Scott Phillion of South Lyon, who carded a 9-under 63 and then won a scorecard playoff with the runner-up team of Justin Krehel of Metamora and Bill Gibbons of Lapeer, who also shot a net 63 in regulation play. Both teams will move on to the finals.

Brothers Rix Naimi and Anthony Naimi of West Bloomfield put together a 10-under 62 for second place in the morning.

Two teams tied for third with 63s and earned the final two spots moving on to the finals from the morning: Sean Gouda of West Bloomfield and teammate Yvette Johnson of Farmington Hills, and Brian Bigham of Oxford and his teammate, Mike Barry of Livonia.

The Afternoon Wave, at least the last two teams moving on to the finals, took well into the evening to be determined with an eight-team sudden-death on-course playoff at 8-under 64.

The last two teams earning spots in the finals after four playoff holes were Hobson and his partner Duane Jerome of Sandusky, and Tapinder Kalsi of Canton and Michael Lam of Northville.
