93rd Michigan Open Begins June 14

Orchard Lake, MI: The 93rd playing of the Michigan Open Championship, presented by Michigan Lincoln Mercury Dealers will be played June 14th thru 17th at the Orchard Lake Country Club. The purse is $70,000.


Mt. Pleasant’s, Ryan Brehm hopes to repeat his dominating performance as the defending champion. Brehm won his first professional event here last year by 8-strokes on his way to a 20-under par performance. It was the first time The Michigan Open was played at the Orchard Lake County Club


Matt Thompson, a sophomore from the University of Michigan and a runner-up last year will be back trying to win the James D Standish Jr. Trophy. Thompson from Battle Creek was recently honored with PING Division I All-Midwest Region honors by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He led U-M with a career-best and school-record 72.00 scoring average.


The highly talented roster of qualifiers includes six-time Michigan Open Champion, Scott Hebert, Head Professional at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, attempting to win an unprecedented 7th victory. Six other former champions are in the field including Bob Ackerman, Steve Brady, Randy Erskine, Ted Kondratko, Barry Redmond and Andrew Ruthkowski.


Two youngsters will be competing in 2010. Henry Do a 16-year old freshman from Ann Arbor Greenhills High School qualified during his high school season. His school won the MHSAA Division 4 Regional where Henry was the medalist with a 68. He will be competing in the state finals this weekend just prior to the Michigan Open.


David DeMarios is the youngest player in the tournament at age 14. The Brighton Scranton Middle School 8th grader qualified at Plum Hollow Country Club. DeMarios was the 2009 Adams Golf Junior Tour Player of The Year for 11-15 year olds.


Andy Matthews of Grand Rapids and a current Canadian Tour player is also in the field. Matthews won the Mexican PGA Championship earlier this year. A former west-sider, Bill Zylstra, 55, will be playing while ranked as the top Senior Amateur in the country by Golfweek Magazine.


The field is currently set at 153 golfers. Close to 40-players will be competing for the last 3 spots on Saturday, June 12th at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan.
