Hebert Wins 3rd Consecutive Michigan PGA Championship
HAWK HOLLOW PROPERTIES, Bath, Mich. * Scott Hebert?s excellent summer vacation ended with an explanation point today when he won his third consecutive Michigan PGA Professional Championship. The 39-year old Head Professional at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa held his second round lead and won by 3-shots after firing a 4-under 68 at Eagle Eye.
Hebert came into the final round with a single shot lead over Mick DeKorver, his former boss at Sunnybrook CC and two shots better than Brian Cairns. DeKorver got in early trouble and it became a two player race between Hebert and Cairns from Highland Golf Center.
The final round was the story of 4 holes that resulted in 2-shot swings on the leader-board. It started at the 9th with a Cairns birdie and a Hebert bogey which cut Hebert?s lead to one. The story reversed itself on number 10 and Hebert went back to 3-up. Cairns birdied 14 and then made up another 2 shots on 15 with a birdie and a Hebert bogey.
With the score tied going into the 16th Cairns got a bad break when his drive just slipped into the rough leaving him with a bad lie. He eventually bogeyed the hole while Hebert placed a 9-iron from 139 yards to 6 feet and made the birdie putt. It was the end of the two stroke swings and Cairns? chance for a 3rd PGA Championship. ?I got a lot of good breaks this week,? Cairns said, ?and one bad one down the stretch.?
Hebert went on to birdie the last hole for the 3-shot margin of victory. ?I was playing with all I had but Brian was playing wonderfully, especially on the back 9,? Hebert said. Hebert joins a list of other 3-time Michigan PGA Champions that include Ken Allard, Lynn Janson, Jeff Roth and John Barnum. Legendary, Al Watrous won the first event in 1922, the first of his nine championships.
Hebert added $7000 to his summer 2008 take. He?s had an adventurous summer that included playing in the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills.
He won the PGA Professional National Championship in Georgia, The Michigan Pro-Pro and the McGladderey team event. He?s a six-time Michigan Open Champion but had to withdraw this year because his wife went into premature labor after the first round. He came in 2nd at the Michigan Pro-Assistant and 3rd place at the Boyne Tournament of Champions.
This tournament is an event within an event. Players were also competing for exemptions into next year?s PGA Professional National Championship, the event Hebert won this year to qualify for the PGA Championship. Other Michigan players who qualified are Brad Dean, Lee Houtteman, Ron Beurmann, DeKorver, Charles Pasco, Kevin Tucci, Steve Wells, Sean Winters, Brent Kish, John Seltzer and David Osmer.
This is the third year The Michigan PGA Championship has been played at Hawk Hollow Properties. The first two rounds were played on each of the Hawk Hollow courses with the third and final round contested on the Eagle Eye course. The purse was $62,000.
