EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State junior golfer Sam Weatherhead has been named Big Ten Men’s Golfer of the Week, after winning his first tournament of the season, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan fired a three-round total of 14-under par 202, capturing individual medalist honors in the Fossum Memorial at the par-72, 7,073-yard Point O’Woods Golf Course and Country Club. The 54 hole 202 is a new Michigan State record set by Ryan Brehm during the 2005 Big Ten Championships.

He carded three rounds in the 60’s, including a 7-under-par 65 in the second round, which ties for the third-lowest in school history. He led the tournament wire-to-wire.

This is Weatherhead’s second career Big Ten Men’s Golfer of the Week honor after capturing the award in March of 2015. He earned the first award after earning individual medalist honors at the Colleton River Collegiate for his first collegiate tournament win.

The Spartans will take a brief break before returning to action on Oct. 26-27 at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in Vero Beach, Fla.
