Solitude Links Golf Course & Banquet Center owner Paul D’Anna wants golfers to know that despite the amount of water and fescue grass on his links-style course, the venue is extremely playable.
“We have several leagues that play here and get around very well and love it,” says D’Anna. “We have a lot of senior players who enjoy the course and I just would like to see more golfers come and experience the beauty of our golf course.”
With its large clubhouse and lush greens, people might mistake Solitude Links for a private course at first glance. But the course, located in Kimball, Michigan in the shadow of the Blue Water Bridge, is public and very reasonably priced.
Formerly known as Fore Lakes Golf Course, the recent name change reflects the peaceful atmosphere golfers will find as they make their way around the links. The course is challenging but not so much so that it takes the fun out of your golf round.
The par 5 first hole measures 544 yards with a third and final shot over water of about 150 to 160 yards. It is a serious starter hole, but things get more golfer friendly from that point on. Even on that rather intimidating first hole, there is a second green that doesn’t require the water shot for the less-skilled golfer.
The par 5 15th could be dubbed the course’s signature hole. It measures a slightly twisting 529 yards with a big fairway and a large pine frames a beautiful vista near the green. Two short par 4 holes were appealing for different reasons: the par 4 No. 3 hole has a short shot over water but demands a smart tee shot while the par 4 17th is void of water issues but is well-bunkered with a welcoming green setting.
D’Anna – a very good golfer himself with a 5.1 USGA handicap index – has made course maintenance a top priority. Golfers will find the course in great shape and a special aeration machine that jets air into the ground so that even autumn golfers won’t encounter plugs on the greens.
“I think the true character of the course because of the water in the lakes and the links to land with our fairways and greens is a links look so we brought that back in the rough areas around some of the hazards,” says D’Anna. “I like the natural look and I think we have avoided making the course more difficult while still enhancing the natural beauty of the land.”
In addition to golf, Solitude Links is known for being a great venue for weddings and special events.
“We’ve kind of become THE place for weddings in St. Clair County,” says D’Anna.
Folks in the Port Huron area, Northern Macomb County and the Sarnia area know what a special golf course Solitude Links is. D’Anna hopes golfers who might be a little further away will consider making the trek to Kimball to play some links-style golf.
