SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Playing with four players in the final round, the University of Michigan men’s golf team used a true team effort to win the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate Sunday (March 5) at the Desert Mountain’s Outlaw Course. The Maize and Blue bested Northwestern by two shots and third-place Alabama by six in posting its second win of the season.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the guys for the way they played today,” said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. “The course played the toughest of all three rounds, I thought, and they handled everything very well.”

The Wolverines knew all four individual scores were going to count Sunday as junior Kyle Mueller gutted out 36 holes on Saturday while being sick but could not go in the final round. That plus early pressure from Northwestern, which was four under on the front nine, put U-M in second place for most of the day. Michigan battled back with three under-par back nines, taking the lead on the tournament’s final three holes.

“Kyle felt sick yesterday for the 36-hole day but fought through it and unfortunately felt even worse today,” Whitten said. “He has carried the team plenty in the past, and I know the guys wanted to pull it out for him today. For the guys to do that with only four players available in the final round was special.”

Senior Reed Hrynewich clinched the win as he birdied 16 and made a tough par on 18, wrapping up his round of 73. His 207 total was one behind Alabama’s Lee Hodges as Hrynewich earned his second career top-five finish.

“Reed led us on the course this week with some awesome play,” Whitten said. “He probably works the hardest of any player I’ve ever coached, so it’s great to see him play well.”

Sophomore Nick Carlson had Michigan’s best round of the day, as his four birdies helped him to a two-under 70 and a tie for 12th in the individual race with a three-round total of 214. Junior Ian Kim shot an even-par 72 in the final round and tied for 25th place with a 218 total, while senior Bryce Evon shot a final-round 73 and tied for 18th (74-70-73/217).

Michigan had two players in the top 10 as senior Tom Swanson, playing as an individual, tied for sixth with rounds of 72-69-71=212. Freshman Taisei Negishi, also playing as an individual, tied for 61st with a 237 total after a final-round 72.

“We have some fantastic Michigan supporters here in Scottsdale, specifically Jon and Bev Holt, who sponsor this special event, and it feels good to play well with them watching,” Whitten concluded. “I think all the guys can take a lot of confidence from this and hopefully keep building momentum all the way through the spring season.”

Michigan next heads to Eatonton, Georgia, for the Linger Longer Invitational on March 19-21 at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Great Waters Course.
