WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Paced by a career-best-tying 68 (-4) from senior Bryce Evon, the University of Michigan men’s golf team rallied in today’s (Sunday, April 16) final round to post a 291 team total and tie for 11th with a 908 54-hole team total at the Boilermaker Invitational played on Purdue’s Kampen Course.
Opening up play on Saturday morning (April 15), the 15-team field was met by Mother Nature’s wrath with strong and gusting winds elevating scoring across the board. Even with a 73 (+1) from senior Reed Hrynewich, the Wolverines posted a 303 team total to find themselves in the 13th position after the day’s first 18 holes. As the gusty conditions continued, U-M saw second-round missed opportunities add up, yielding a 314 to drop a spot and sit 14th with a 617 total after 36 holes.
Despite a two-hour rain delay in today’s final round, winds lessened in the final round and scoring reflected that. Using seven birdies to post a career-best-tying 68 (-4), Evon sparked a U-M final-round rally. Adding in an even-par 72 from junior Kyle Mueller and a 74 from Hrynewich, the Wolverines tallied a 291 to jump three spots and tie for 11th with a 908 total, along with Michigan State.
“The conditions on the first day of the tournament were by far the toughest we played this year,” said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. “The wind was blowing so strongly for so long that it was really a grind. We obviously never found our rhythm or got comfortable, and it showed in the scores. The guys made a nice comeback today, but still there are plenty of things we can do better.
“It was good to see Kyle (Mueller) shoot even par, and I was especially proud of Bryce (Evon) to shoot four under par today and play with a lot of confidence.”
Individually, Hrynewich led the Wolverines for the second time this spring as he tied for 26th with a 222 total (73-75-74). Using his 18th round of even par or better to close, Mueller posted a top-50 finish, tying for 42nd at 226 (75-79-72). Rounding out U-M’s top three finishers was Evon, who’s 68 (-4) helped him tie for 63rd at 231 (79-84-68).
With the regular season completed, the Wolverines shift their focus to the postseason, starting with the 2017 Big Ten Championships, set for Friday through Sunday, April 28-30, and hosted at the Baltimore Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland.
“These guys know they’re capable of playing at a very high level, and that’s what will focus on getting ready for the Big Ten Championship. It will be an exciting week for us, and I know the guys are extra motivated.”
After going to a neutral site five years ago, the Baltimore Country Club will host the conference championship the next two years.
