COLUMBUS, Ohio — With four Wolverines among the top 30, the University of Michigan women’s golf team closed its regular season today (Sunday, April 16) posting a 911 54-hole team total and finishing sixth at the Lady Buckeye Invitational at the Scarlet Course.

Traveling south to Columbus, Ohio, for the regular-season finale, the Wolverines got off to a solid start, posting a 299 team total as junior Emily White posted a 74, while sophomore Elodie Van Dievoet, senior Grace Choi and freshman Alisa Snyder carded 75s to pace the Maize and Blue. In the second 18 of the 36-hole day and despite a Van Dievoet even-par 72 and second straight 75 from Choi, the Scarlet Course took a few shots back as U-M posted a 301 and positioned itself sixth after the first day.

With strong winds blowing throughout the Midwest and threats of potential rain, the Maize and Blue hung tough with the 12-team field, which featured eight Big Ten teams, to close with a 311 and finish in sixth position, closing with a 911 team total. After opening with back-to-back 80s, junior Kathy Lim led the Wolverines on the final 18 firing a 76, while Van Dievoet and junior Megan Kim carded 77s.

“The Scarlet course is a classic layout, and the conditions really dictated the scoring this week,” said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. “We were competing against the wind as much as we were the golf course and field. We learned a lot this week — particularly with our patience and having the imagination and guts to hit different shots than normal.

“We are lucky to have such tough conditions to compete in heading into postseason, and we will handle it better in the future. I’m excited for what’s ahead, it’s a quick turnaround to Big Tens. We will take advantage of our two practice days leading up to the conference championship.”

Individually, Van Dievoet continued her red-hot spring, leading the Wolverines for the fourth time in five events as she tied for 12th at 224 (75-72-77). Kim posted her fifth top-30 finish of the season and was behind Van Dievoet as she tied for 22nd at 230 (77-76-77).

“Elodie really figured things out and adjusted well in round two,” said Dowling of Van Dievoet’s even-par round. “She was still able to capitalize on some birdie opportunities throughout the weekend.”

“Megan really gutted out her rounds this week,” added Dowling. “I know she was disappointed with her scoring, but the conditions forced her to be extremely cognizant of her shot choices. She made some good adjustments and really made some great decisions out there on her approach shots and around the greens.”

Helping the Wolverines place four among the top 30 were Choi’s tie for 27th at 232 (75-75-82) and White’s tie for 29th at 233 (74-78-81). Lim’s final 76 helped her tie for 41st at 236 (80-80-76), while Snyder closed out U-M’s starters, tying for 43rd at 237 (75-80-82).

With the regular season completed, the Wolverines shift their focus to the postseason, starting with the 2017 Big Ten Championships, Friday through Sunday (April 21-23) hosted at TPC’s River’s Bend in Maineville, Ohio. After going to a neutral site five years ago, River’s Bend will host the conference championship the next two years.
