Robert Tuson, Kevin Demorest Win GAM Net Chapman Title

FRANKENMUTH – Kevin Demorest and Robert Tuson play a lot of golf together, and they have teamed up before in events at Oakhurst Country Club where they are members.

“I’ve also caddied for Kevin before in some of the individual events he plays and he just happened to call me us and said, ‘hey, let’s try this team event,’” Robert said. “So we thought we would bring it on the road and try it.”

Their road game worked. They teamed up to shoot a net 8-under 64 and win the 9th GAM Net Chapman Championship presented by Summit Golf Brands Tuesday at The Fortress Golf Club.

And get this: They are in-laws. Kevin is married to Robert’s daughter Katie.

“We’ve never won a team event before, so this is great,” Kevin, 37, said.

“Loved the format,” Robert, 65, said.

Their 64 was one shot clear. Dennis Guerriero of Lexington and Matthew Finfrock of Garden City, and the team of Jason Carpenter of Howell and Mike Kidder of Ann Arbor each carded net 65s. Guerriero and Finfrock took home the runner-up trophies in a scorecard playoff.

“I think we started off really well, and then like it happens in golf we kind of cooled off in the middle of the round,” Kevin said. “But then we kept it together and made some nice pars coming home.”

Robert said he had no idea they were near the lead.

“I didn’t tell him I was keeping track, but I was, just in case we needed to know,” Kevin said.

A field of 88 golfers on 44 teams played 18 holes of net stroke play in the unique Chapman format: Each player on the two-person teams plays from the teeing ground and then plays the teammate or partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot the partners select the ball with which they wish to score and play that ball alternately to complete the hole.
