COMMERCE TOWNSHIP – Edgewood Country Club’s golf course is described by its membership as player friendly with challenges.
It’s an accurate description and perfect as the host site of the 18th Michigan Net Amateur Championship presented by Michigan Golf Live on Monday and Tuesday.
Male golfers with USGA/GAM Handicap Indexes of 20.4 or better square off over 36 holes and two days of net stroke play to determine a champion.
Edgewood, which plays to a par of 71 over a maximum of 6,400 yards, has been a Golf Association of Michigan member club and host of events for many years, and it has worked to continue updating and improving its golf course over the years, too.
Recently, the club remodeled its No. 18 hole, and in 1994 had a landscaped berm constructed along holes 7 through 9 to add some privacy. In 1989, renowned architect Art Hills did a major renovation of the Ernest W. Way original design. Hills rebuilt and reshaped greens, added strategic bunkers and cart paths were resurfaced among other changes. One of the changes was the lake being brought into play near the green at No. 14, a 345-yard par 4. It is now regarded by the club as a feature hole on the course.
The club also takes pride in its course condition, which is directed by Superintendent Brian Hilfinger. Brent Kish is the longtime PGA Head Golf Professional, and Brian Bach is the general manager. Learn more about Edgewood at edgewoodcountryclub.org.
Matt Magnotte of Macomb returns as the defending champion. Last year a 60-year-old Magnotte topped Harold Tramski of Port Huron in a playoff. He made his only birdie of the day on the final hole of the three-hole aggregate score playoff to win. They were tied at the end of regulation play at net 7-under.
Tramski is also back in the field this year, and 2009 champion Mike Kidder is entered as well.
